Croydon University Hospital, formerly Mayday Hospital〔(Croydon Advertiser August 13 2010 ) Retrieved 12 September 2010〕 is a large NHS hospital in Thornton Heath in south London, England run by Croydon Health Services NHS Trust. It is a District General Hospital with a 24-hour accident and emergency department. The hospital is based on a site in Thornton Heath to the north of central Croydon. The most recent large building project was the Jubilee Wing, opened in December 2004. Its facilities include 670 beds, eight operating theatres, a day surgery suite with three theatres, two obstetric theatres and recovery room, and overnight facilities for parents. Croydon Health Services NHS Trust is developing an application for Foundation Trust status. The hospital's roots are as the infirmary of Croydon Workhouse, opened in 1885 in Mayday Road to replace the previous infirmary in Duppas Hill, the workhouse itself having moved to Thornton Heath in 1866.
